It makes it a whole lot more fun if you understand the terms and "lingo" of the scrapbooking and paper crafting world!
ABC ALBUM An album compiled with layouts for each letter of the alphabet ACCESSORIES Page accents that you can make or buy. This includes stickers, beads, ribbon, chalk, buttons, eyelets,charms, silk flowers, and brads. (Also known as embellishments) ACID Chemical substance/bacteria with a PH of less than 7.0 that causes paper to deteriorate, discolor and/or become brittle. In essence, it ruins photos - so all supplies used near and around photos need to be "acid-free" ACID FREE Products that are free from harmful acids that eat away at the liquid on your photos. Harmful acids can occur in the manufacturing process. ACIDIC MIGRATION Transfer of acidity from acidic materials to another less acidic material through physical contact or acidic vapors e.g. newspaper clippings cause discoloration where they are placed and on the items they touch a de-acidification spray should be used on acidic papers or items should be photocopied on acid free paper ADHESIVE Used to adhere or attach photos, accessories and memorabilia to scrapbook pages or other project. Acid-free adhesive can come in forms such as liquid, paste, gel, solid sticks, tabs ADOBE PHOTOSHOP Software for editing photographs and graphics AF/LF Acronym for acid free and lignin free ALBUM An archival quality book in which you place your finished scrapbook pages for posterity and safekeeping. Warning: magnetic albums can destroy photos, documents, certificates and memorabilia ALKALINE Opposite of acid added to materials containing acid to neutralize the acid having a ph level of 7.0 or higher ALTERED Collaging, stamping, embellishing or altering a found book to reflect an artistic idea ANALOGOUS COLORS Colors that are next to each other on the color wheel ARCHIVAL A non-technical term suggesting that a substance is chemically stable,durable and permanently safe. Materials have undergone process and determined their acidic and buffered content and are within safe levels for long term preservation BINDING To affix pages or fasten between 2 covers resulting in "book" effect BLEED The leaking effect that occurs when too much ink or paint is absorbed by the paper and spreads BONE FOLDER A flat piece of hard plastic used for scoring (creasing) for easier folding of paper; usually for cards BORDER The upper,lower and side edges or margins of a scrapbook page. Sometimes refers to a border design that is handmade or manufactured and attached to a page BRAG BOOK Small album used to "brag" with photos of a specific theme, usually children and grandchildren BUFFERING Adding an alkaline substance (usually calcium carbonate) during manufacturing to give it a ph level of more than 8.5, making it acid free and protect the item from acid and environmental pollutants CARDSTOCK The heaviest of scrapbook papers; thick and sturdy. Available in a variety of weights (much like construction paper but acid & lignin free) for safe use with photos CHALKING A technique to enhance your pages, embellishments, or die cuts with chalk CHRONOLOGICAL Arranged in order of time of occurrence as it pertains to the sorting and organizing of photos and memorabilia or the order in which they appear in an album CK OK Creating Keepsakes Okay – scrapbooking seal of approval of items considered safe to use in scrapbooking and adjacent to photos COLLAGE Artistic composition made up of various materials or photos in non-conformative fashion COLORFAST A pigment or dye that is resistant to light, acid, heat and other harmful conditions COMPLIMENTARY COLOR A color made up of a combination of two primary colors (red, blue, yellow) that results in a new color & opposite color(red & blue = purple for example) CORNER ROUNDER A small tool that rounds the edges off of paper or photos; can be hand-held or industrial size to trim more than one article at a time CORRUGATED PAPER A thick, wavy cardstock (tiny waves) CROP An event; scrapbook party (also called a "workshop), much like a quilting bee, attended by scrapbookers or other crafters where attendees work on their scrapbooks, cards or other creative projects in a fun environment. These are usually hosted by a consultant or experienced scrapbooker who can oversee and share new techniques, products and information CROPPING The act of cutting or trimming photos to enhance the image and eliminate unnecessary backgrounds or items. Trimming unwanted parts of an image (photo) altering it by trimming off the edges (sides or corners); using either scissors or paper cutter or image editing software. Could also refer to turning photos into shapes CS Acronym for cardstock DE-ACIDFY To remove acid from paper, documents, newspaper clippings or other materials to prevent deterioration with a spray that neutralizes acid to avoid discoloration and/or deterioration DECORATIVE SCISSORS Scissors with special-cut blades or teeth that provide a wide array of cut patterns and designs and available in various cutting depths and shapes. Decorative scissors are suggested to be used on only the matte and not the photo DIE CUT Shapes and designs cut from a die-cut machine or other type of cutter DIGITAL IMAGE An image obtained from software or computer composed of pixels or dots DOUBLE MOUNT To "frame" a photo on two background papers with an edge of each showing DRY EMBOSSING Produces a raised image by pushing the image up from the underside with a tool called a stylus EMBELLISHMENT Another name for an accessory; page accents that you can make or buy. This includes stickers, beads, ribbon, chalk, buttons, eyelets, charms, silk flowers, and brads EMBOSS (Wet) Creates a raised surface using a stamp pad and embossing powder which is "set" with a heat tool made for embossing. It directs hot air directly to the area, melting the embossing powder, creating a slightly raised surface for the design EMBOSSING POWDER A fast melting powder used as described above to present a raised and colorful image on paper EYELETS Otherwise known as a "grommet"; a small metal ring designed to reinforce a hole. In scrapbooking and card-making, eyelets are used to connect components to a page, for design purposes, or to feed ribbon and fiber through HAND TINTING The process of applying colors to the surface of a black and white photograph, giving it the appearance of a colored photograph or highlighting particular objects as a focal point JOURNALING Refers to handwritten, handmade or computer-gernerated text that provides pertinent details about the photos. Could include titles, captions, long descriptions, poem or stories LAYOUT To "layout" and arrange heading, journaling, memorabilia and photos on one or more pages for a scrapbook to form an attractive design to feature the photos themselves; could be with or without decoration LIGNIN A harmful substance that binds wood fibers together, and contributes to breakdown of paper. Papers with high levels of lignin are very acidic and therefore cause materials to become yellowish and brittle LIGNIN FREE Paper products void of the lignin bacteria or having a max of 1% lignin MATTE A surface with no glossy finish MATTING To create a frame around pictures using cardstock and/or patterned paper; usually cropped in the shape of the photo. Separates photo from the scrapbook page's background paper MEMORABILIA Mementos and souvenirs saved from travel, school and life's special events; items that are worthy of remembrance MIXED MEDIA The use of several methods and media which could include paints, papers, rubber stamps, inks, fibers and embellishments MONOCHROMATIC Different shades and values of the same basic color MOSAIC Small objects cut from paper or pictures to form a design or image MOUNTING The process of attaching a photo, memorabilia or embellishment to another piece of paper MOUNTING SQUARES Small squares of double sided tape that act as an adhesive to adhere two items together; an adhesive MULBERRY PAPER A paper made up of fibers that appears much like tissue paper and can be torn to resemble a feathery look NSBR An acronym for “non scrapbook related” PAGE PROTECTORS Plastic sleeve or covering (PVC and acid free) to cover and protect scrapbook pages for preservation PAPER PIECING An artistic design or object created with multiple layers of paper PAPER TEARING Tearing paper instead of cutting so that the edges are rough and not perfect; a handmade look PAPER TRIMMER Cutting tool used for cutting paper or photos. Could consist of straight or decorative edges PH LEVEL Measurement of acidic content PHOTO SAFE A term used to indicate the products are safe for use with photos POLYETHYLENE A soft, chemically-stable plastic used in manufacturing preservation products POLYPROPYLENE A clear, chemically-stable plastic used in manufacturing preservation products including scrapbook page protectors POLYVINYL CHLORIDE (PVC) A substance used in plastic pages in old magnetic photo albums that deteriorates and harms photos over time POST BOUND ALBUM Albums that are held together with metal posts that are generally expandable PUNCH A rugged tool used to cut shapes by inserting paper and pressing blade against it. Punches come in hundreds of shapes, signs and sizes QUILLING A paper design made by curling small pieces of paper with a quilling tool to produce shapes REPOSITIONALBE Referring to an adhesive that is not permanent; it allows you to reposition items (usally for a short period of time SCRAPBOOK Album used to display photographs, memorabilia and memories with decoration and embellishments. Is not limited with pockets to only hold photos SELF HEALING MAT A mat that you can cut on and it maintains it form and is re-usable SHAKER BOX A "box" formed with paper piecing and a thin layer of PVC free plastic that contains items such as beads, confetti, punches, etc. that can be shaken for effect SHEET PROTECTORS The same as page protectors; a plastic sleeve or covering (PVC and acid free) to cover and protect scrapbook pages for preservation and to protect them from external factors SILHOUETTE Cropping that entails trimming closely around the contours of the subject in your photo SPIRAL BOUND ALBUM An album with wire binding at the spine as opposed to posts, glue or book binding. Limited to number of pages contained in the book; not expandable SPRAY ADHESIVE Aerosol spray adhesive that appears clear and covers large areas with an even amount of glue STICKER A decorative accent; one of the easiest ways to embellish scrapbook pages or any other creative project STRAP HINGE ALBUM An album secured with plastic straps that run through a staple like "hinge" that keep the pages in place in the book. Allows the book to be expanded SWIVEL KNIVES Similar to an X-acto blade but rotates as you "trace" around a shape or curve such as in a template. Eliminates the need to trace with a pencil and cut out later with scissors or other kind of blade TAPE RUNNER A dispenser containing small pieces of double sided tape or adhesive that distributes tape in an even manner to adhere photos or embellishments TEMPLATE Commonly known as a stencil, usually made of plastic, sturdy paper or cardboard used as a guide to trace shapes THEME The specific subject or topic to which a scrapbook or page is devoted the overall emphasis of a page or scrapbook THREE RING ALBUM An album consisting of 3 rings (or could be more) that snap apart for easy page insertion or removal. Enables album to be expandable TOTE Bag, case or rolling container used for organizing and carrying your supplies and/or creative machines VELLUM Lightweight translucent paper WET ADHESIVE Adhesive that is applied in wet/liquid form and later dries; usually clear XYRON MACHNE A machine that applies adhesive to pages, laminates or applies magnetic backing; is self reliant, does not require electricity and comes in several different sizes
